BLOGPOST 35 PLANNING- Film credits by Lauryn Lindo-Hutchinson - Task 1

Example 1:

SE7EN
  • The name of the film is se7en
  • The font used look like someone's handwriting and from what we see in the different scenes it looks like the handwriting was from the delusion man's diary.
  • The transitions that the text made was very jumpy and the actual titles were flashing and sometimes appearing backwards and then flashing back around. The closest match to the Se7en film is Jiggy on After Affects.
  • The color white is used in contrast to the rest of the film which used a very dark and dismal color palette the choice of the color white made the writing stand out more and made it clearer than if it was to be in any other color
  • The pace of the titles were very fast paced which added to the atmosphere that the film makers wanted to create. The movement was also very quick as the titles would jump from different corners of the screen.
  • Some of the titles were on plain backgrounds which gave the titles a high contrast (black and white) and some of the titles were integrated into the scenes shown.
  • I like these titles because the font type is unique and I haven't seen a font like that before and the font also links to the film which is interesting.
  • splice
  • The film that I have chosen is called splice
  • The font used is like veins molding into letters. There are many scenes that the font changes throughout the film but mainly the font is some type of body tissue like a veins or capillaries.
  • The transition from font to font Is clever as every time we see a font to see the next one the camera moves of the previous one and makes the audience travel (go through the body of the creature) to find the other font somewhere else in the body.
  • The use of color which is green adds to the storyline and the plot of the film the formation of the creature is not normal or human and the green empathizes the alien feel of the movie .
  • The movement as mentioned previous takes us to a different place in the body. This happens at a medium speed so the audience gets to see the detailing like the blood cells.
  • All of the titles are integrated into the scene, literally as the scene is set in the creatures body and the titles will be in the shape of the things that we are seeing in the body.
  • I like this title sequence a lot as they it is very creative and gives the audience almost background into the movie before the movie has started so the audience will ask questions.

PLANNING - Our film institution (by Monika)

Designing Our Film Institution

As our chosen genre is thriller, I searched for the institutions that distribute this type of films. One of the most popular ones that I found was 'New line cinema'. Is is an American film studio founded in 1967 by Robert Shaye as a film distribution company, later becoming an independent film studio. In 2008 it was merged with Warner Bros

Another institution which has been producing thriller genre movies for many year is 'Momentum Pictures'. It is  originally one of the leading independent motion picture distributors in the UK and Ireland and released approximately 20 theatrical films a year, with several dtv releases. Most successful films that it has released incude:
The King's Speech, Amélie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lost in Translation, Control, Downfall, The Illusionist, Just Friends, District B13 Ultimatum, The Men Who Stare at Goats.

As I was looking at these and other institution indents, I tried to come up with one for my group. For me thriller associates with nigh, mystery and darkness, so I sketched some ideas onto the paper:

As a group we decided to stick with the first design as it associates with mystery and night. I used adobe illustrator to produce it digitally and then online site: logomaker.com to add the text. We called it nigh vision productions.

I then used after effects to create a visual motion image of our indent.

RESEARCH - Practical Remake Activity Evaluation

Evaluation of our remake of SE7EN

Compare to the Prelim that me and my previous group produced, I feel as if every step has become better in this project. Firstly, the planning went so much better as each member in the group worked on a specific area of planning, then we all came together and shared our findings as well as sharing our ideas. Personally, the planning which I produced was very helpful for when we started creating our production as it meant that we knew what were doing and didn't waste time thinking about what we should be doing.

We filming, I feel like I done a lot better than in the Prelim. I wasn't as shaky, only when/if it was deliberate in order to get the full effect for our opening. The shots which were produced were all quite similar in this project but enabled me to explore different angles of the same shot in which we decided as a group which was better to used in post production.

Editing as well went better than previously, especially because myself and the rest of the group knew how to use the editing software and knew exactly how we wanted it to look predominantly as we had the original sequence to refer to. However, we struggled with time a little bit due to creating and adding the titles as none of us had done that before and it took a while for us to adjust to the process of doing so. On the other hand, the sound was very easy to add and we had no problem with that.

Overall, I am very pleased with how our remake turned out, and I feel like my skills in planning, filming and editing are developing faster than I had expected.

BLOGPOST 34 PLANNING - SHOT LIST BY LAURYN

We thought hard about the type of shots that we were going to use for our title sequence.
Here are the shot lists for our sequence:

Researching into existing distribution companies

I looked at the distribution and marketing of a thriller movie which in a way is similar to what our group intends to produce. The movie I looked at was The Omen 1976.

I found that the movie is copyrighted by Twentieth Century Fox and has many different distributors which are shown in the image below.

The film produced an advert in which was broadcasted on Television as well as posters being distributed around towns in public places. As this movie was produced in 1976, there were no social media sites dedicated to the movie. However, there are currently fan sites dedicated to the movie.

The Omen wasn't restricted in release, in fact it was released in many different languages so many more people in different countries were able to watch the film and understand it. The film was released in languages such as Spanish, Italian, Latin and German. The film is also available on DVD and Blu Ray.

During the opening weekend alone, the box office sales came to the total of $4,273,886 and to this date made $60,922,980 in the USA. The film also made $28,544,000 from DVD rentals.

The film has a link to another form of media as it produced its own soundtrack.

This distributor could possibly distribute our film as we are producing the same genre of film. However, Twentieth Century Fox tend to distribute and work with films with a high budget, and we are producing a student film opening.

BRIEF - Overview of intended production

FILM IDEA
A teenage girl gets stalked by a character who never gets revealed. This character follows her around- literally everywhere she goes and has plans which aren't revealed in the opening title sequence. The young girl is aware of strange things that are occurring but never thinks big of them until now.

KEY PROPS
Laptop as a lot of the stalking is done online, fake blood, dolls heads, a knife and Polaroid pictures.

LOCATIONS
Forest/Field, a graveyard, an attic and a busy place such a Oxford Street

SETTINGS
In front of shops, middle of the road

COSTUMES
Different costumes for the two main characters -
Stalker - all black clothes, especially a black hoodie
Girl - Typical teenage girl outfits, jeans and crop top.

LIGHTING
Dull lighting used in the majority of the shots and settings. Natural lighting in Oxford Street and highlighted lighting in the lair.
