BLOGPOST 14 RESEARCH- GENRE CONVENTIONS.
THIS IS A PREZI ABOUT DIFFFERENT TYPES OF GENRE THAT APPEAR IN A THRILLER CONVENTION.
BLOGPOST 13 RESEARCH- ANALYSING THREE TITLE SEQUENCES.
Analysing 3 Title Sequences
The Game:
Micro analysis:
Camera:
In the opening of The Game, the first thing we see is a mid-shot of a father and song posing on what seems to be a camera on a special occasion as they are wearing a suits and ties, there is also no movement of the camera while this shot is taking place.
Throughout the movie opening there are a range of close ups of peoples faces with various tracking shots of people walking, running and playing.
Lastly there consists of a wide shot to establish where they are which looks like a wedding .
Editing:
There are special effects as after every credit there it breaks up into little puzzle pieces like it is part of the game. This helps add to the effect of the actual title hence the name 'The Game'.
The editing also looks like they are playing on old movie as it has lines through the opening as if the movie opening was really outdated. Also between shots it would go black and cut which gave an uneasy feel to the whole opening and that even though it was a happy time there was still something uneasy about it. for example it would be nice/cuts/nice.
Mise-en-scene:
There are different locations and different settings within the movie opening but it looks like its based on a wedding at the reception with different glimpse's of what everything was doing. The costumes in the movie opening are fancy with mainly suits and pretty dresses showing indicating a celebration. Also there are lots of different pictures of happy moments within the scene.
Sound:
There is a music soundtrack within the opening the music is old and there is a piano playing in the background, however even though the music is soft not a media trope for a thriller there is something uneasy about everything in the scene and the music adds to this,
There is sound effects in the film indent which is the glass shattering which adds to the effect of the indent breaking up into little puzzle pieces.
Macro Analysis:
Macro Analysis:

The key plot idea introduces in the title sequence is a intimate family event (wedding) with some creepy characters in the midst of the happiness.
The key plot idea introduces in the title sequence is a intimate family event (wedding) with some creepy characters in the midst of the happiness.
In what order is the storyline introduced?
The storyline is introduced slowly at different times as the movie opening doesn't seem to run consistently and it doesn't seem to be put together seamlessly so the audience has to do the work to put together the pieces.
What characters are introduced? When and how?
The little boy and his father are introduced in the beginning of the film, showing that they are significant to the movie opening, we also see them in various times throughout. There is also all the family introduces though the rest of the opening however we do not focus on the actual family.
What social groups are represented? How are they represented?
They are represented as a normal family as they are at a normal family event which is a joyous occasion. This is stereotypical of a family coming together at a wedding looking like the perfect family. However some of the family are represented badly as he father was caught smoking on several occasions and the boy pushed another little boy into the swimming pool showing the cracks in the family.
Are you Afraid of the Dark:
Micro Analysis
Camera:
There is an establishing shot of the scenery which consists of a boat and swings that are moving.
Editing:
There are edits that seem like heartbeats as they change from different shots
Mise-en-scene:
There are dark and dim lighting in the place, which mainly looks blue because of the storm outside which projects into the actual room.
The location is in an old house based in an attic.
There also features a clown that pops up in a panning shot.
There is also a focus on the keyhole which seems to be lighting up outside which could be symbolic and part of the technical codes.
The title appears to be dark at first then a match is lit and the title changes color then it goes back to the original color when the match is blown out there is also smoke.
Sound:
There is also apprehensive music as the location is established.
Also sound effects of children laughing specifically a girl laugh is dominant, which adds to the sense of creepiness.
When the clown is coming nearer we can hear the music intensify as it moves closer to the clown showing the significance of what looks to be like just a toy.
Macro Analysis:
What is the key plot idea introduced in the title sequence?
The key plot is introduced near the middle of the title sequence as the music intensifies and we see a clown come into focus which gives a clue to the plot. As the clown looks scary the audience can come to a conclusion that the movie is a thriller involving a sinister clown.

In what order is the storyline introduced?
The setting is introduced first and as the setting is dark and dingy the first scene of the title sequence seems to be introducing the mood of the film. We don't learn about the setting until we enter the house when we hear children laughing and the clown appear.
What characters are introduced? When and how?
There are no actual real life characters in the actual opening which adds suspicion and enhances the theme of the setting being abandoned and wrecked. The movie opening looks like its there to establish the setting and the possible villain (the clown).
What social groups are represented? How are they represented?
There are no social groups represented in the opening sequence as there is no actual characters, by doing this it is more engaging as the audience will want to know about the characters making them watch more of the movie.

are all the ways that the camera moves. They have also shot the film opening so the audience feels like they are inside the body of the creature and is transporting us to different places in her body.
Editing:
The indent blends into the action movies as warner bros is not in its original colours its in darker colors which then transforms into an image of a skeleton. This again happens to the various companies shown in the film opening.

At the end of the film there is also a piece of skin shown and as time passes veins start appearing to form the word 'splice' which is the title of the film.
Mise-en-scene:
The whole scene is darkly lit and mainly in green (the colour palette).

There is a piano playing in the background of the movie and the piano is playing very softly which creates a scary atmosphere. The music is also very intense as we go further into the film opening.

There is also a violin present and can be heart along with the piano.
Macro Analysis:

What social groups are represented? How are they represented?
There not many social groups represented as this title sequence is a discreet title sequence and doesn't give much away.
BLOGPOST 12 RESEARCH- TARGET AUDIENCE
Target Audience research
A target audience is a particular group at which a product such as a film or advertisement is aimed. Target audiences are important to the producers as they help produce appropriate content that will be aimed at a certain audience for example and animation like Inside Out may be aimed at 7-14 year olds and the content is very imaginative and unrealistic.
Survey monkey:
These are my target audience survey monkey results where I asked questions and several people answered the questions.

YouTube interviews:
This is my video where I interviewed three people of different ages and genders to find out what type of films they like and why they like them to gain more insight as I will have to chose a certain target audience for my title sequence. I recorded them on my IPhone and then used an app called videolab free to but all the footage together. I also used an app called vont to add font to the blank spaces.

RESEARCH- Target Audience Interviews and Survey
SURVEYS AND INTERVIEWS
I decided to ask different people of different gender and age about their favourite movies to explore our options of target audience. and to see what film would appeal more to each target audience. I recorded the responses and have placed them in this video.
I also distributed a survey on my social media accounts, as well as emailing it to a few people who I thought would respond straight away. Thee are the results:
I found that the majority of the people who answered the survey were female...
... as well as being aged 17 or younger. However, there was quite a variety of different ages who took part.
Results showed that the majority of people who took part in the survey spent their free time watching TV or Films.
The majority of people said that they enjoyed watching films. Many people said that they chose 'Sometimes' as they had to be in the mood to watch one.
Although many people said that they prefer American films, this put us to a little stop. We realised that we had to form some kind of American feature to our film opening in order to appeal to more people as well as audiences.
I asked people to describe their favourite types of characters so that we could possibly create a character with similar qualities to help to appeal to more people.
Here are some other questions that I asked that I thought would be helpful and useful to know when it comes to creating our own storyline, characters and film opening as a whole.
RESEARCH - Why is sound so important?
SOUND
Sound is very important in film. It is said that sound is 50% of what makes a movie. As a class, we listened to a title sequence of an action movie. We found that everyone seemed to not be interested and found it awkward and strange as they imagined the sound in their heads. I personally felt quite anxious as I knew it was supposed to be there but it never came. We then watched the film with the sound on and everyone found that the film was more interesting and everyone wanted to watch more.

The sound in movies consist of
- Narration - Someone telling a story over what's being presented on the screen ( a commentary)
- Dialogue - speaking carried out by the characters
- Music - soundtrack, background music
- Sound effects - Diegetic sounds added in for effect
RESEARCH - What is genre?
Genre is used to categorise films into groups which share the same features. Examples of this would be Comedy, Romance or Horror. You can even further and use a sub genre to categorise a film. These are sub-divisions of a genre which are for example; fairytale and chick flicks. Hybrid Genres are also used - this is when a film is a combination of two or more genres. An example of this would be Rom-Coms or Action and Adventure. A genre can be determined by Codes and Conventions - these are signs which create meaning or create symbolism. Genre tropes are common themes or devices seen in a certain genre of film. This can also be used to determine the genre.
My favourite film genres would have to be Horror, Romance and Rom-Coms (Hybrid genre).
I really enjoy horror movies because of the adrenaline rush they cause when making the audience jump. This still is from Paranormal Activity. As lighting is very dark, and there's a shadow hovering near the subject, you can tell that this is a horror film. As well as this, the fact that it shows that this is being recorded as the date and time are shown in the bottom left corner, is a typical feature of horror movies as the victims try to capture the creature that is causing odd and scary things that happen.
Lastly, Rom-Coms. This hybrid genre is perfect for me as I love romance movies, but to have a movie that makes you feel warm inside and makes you laugh is always better. The Movie Clueless is an example of that. This still image shows two characters sitting together on the couch. The fact that the female looks very uncomfortable and stiff and that the guy hasn't taken any notice of this shows the comedic side to the situation. The costume and makeup of the female character shows that she's very girly as she's wearing really light colours - she is also sitting up straight which adds to that.

The last song is an example of a Romance. This is one of my favourite film genres as it makes me feel really warm inside when two character do cute things with each other. Just by looking at the still image, you can tell that this is a romance. It's set on a beach which is a typical setting for a romantic movie. As well as this, the two characters are standing in the centre, looking at each other lovingly. Their body language also helps determine the genre as they're holding each other close romantically, and it looks like they're about to kiss.

RESEARCH - Genre and Audience research
STATISTICAL YEARBOOK 2014
Three genres that were most successful at the UK box office -
The pattern of box
office by genre each year is usually determined by a small number of high
grossing releases.
Animation, which included the biggest film of the year, Despicable
Me 2, was the top earning genre with a combined gross of £247 million. Action was the second highest earning genre of the year with a
combined gross of £215 million and comedy was third with £158 million.
Three genres that were least popular or successful at the UK box office -
Romance, Documentary and War.
...
Film genre which had most films released in 2013-2014 - COMEDY. It released 153 films in 2013-2014.
...
However, even though animation and action were the most successful genres, there were only 33 animated films and 47 action movies made.
This information about genre shows that in film production genres who released the largest amount of movies have been least successful, while the ones who released small amout took over the first places in the most succsessful genre table. Also, this proves that the audience for animation is way bigger than producers expect and people are more likely to watch this genre.
...
In
2013, the 15-24 age group made up the largest proportion of UK cinema
admissions, at 33%.
The most succsessful comedy film with this age group was - The Hungover Part III
The most popular film with over 50s was - Quartet which was a drama film.
Genres that were most popular with men - Thriller, action and comedy.
Genres that were most popular with women - Biografical, Animation, Romance.
UK films appealed most to C1 audience type.
Three films which were most popular with 7-14 year olds - 'One direction: this is us', 'Wreck- It Ralph' and 'Despicable Me2'. This shows that young people preffer to watch animations or movies related to their idols. As animation was the most successful genre, I think that children made up the largest audience.
Three films that were most popular with 35-44 year olds were - 'Frozen', 'The Croods' and 'Jack and the Giant Slayer'. This contributes to animation being the most successful genre as people at that age are most ikely to have young kids who like animations, the parents tend to go and watch movies with their kids and look after them.
Three fims that were most popular with 25-34 year olds were - 'Django Unchained', 'Fast and Furious 6' and 'Rush'.
People in London prefer action and western films while people in Scotland are more likely to watch drama films, this suggests that the people from different regions/countries have different lifestyles and tastes.
According to the ethnicity of audience table we can see that
white
audiences were over-represented among video buyers and under-represented among
consumers of other platforms.
Also, as
in 2013, disabled people were under-represented across all film platforms with
the exception of physical sell-through. Disabled audiences were particularly
under-represented among cinema-goers.
