RESEARCH - Why is sound so important?

SOUND

Sound is very important in film. It is said that sound is 50% of what makes a movie. As a class, we listened to a title sequence of an action movie. We found that everyone seemed to not be interested and found it awkward and strange as they imagined the sound in their heads. I personally felt quite anxious as I knew it was supposed to be there but it never came. We then watched the film with the sound on and everyone found that the film was more interesting and everyone wanted to watch more.

The sound in movies consist of

  1. Narration - Someone telling a story over what's being presented on the screen ( a commentary)
  2. Dialogue - speaking carried out by the characters
  3. Music - soundtrack, background music
  4. Sound effects - Diegetic sounds added in for effect
