BLOGPOST 10 RESEARCH- WHAT IS A GENRE?

What is a genre?

Genre means 'type' or 'category'
  • It helps quickly establish differences between the  media forms
  • It also helps to establish certain expectations and familiarity in audiences
  • It also helps audiences develop personal tastes around genre consumption
A Genre is a way of categorizing a certain type of film. some examples of genre's are:
  • Romance
  • Thriller
  • Chic-Flic
  • Horror etc.
A sub genre is a subdivision of a genre of film. An example would be a scary movie with elements of comedy an example of film with a sub genre Is scary movie (horror/comedy).

A hybrid genre blends themes and elements from two or more different genres it could also be known as a cross- genre. An example of this would be a ROM-COM.An example of this in a film would be Bridget Jones.

Codes and Conventions: codes are a system of signs that create meaning they can be divided into two categories technical and symbolic . Technical codes are all the ways in which equipment is used to tell the story in a media text. For example camera angles and for symbolic clothing could be used.

Genre tropes are a common way or overused theme or device, cliché.

analysis of three genres:

This a romantic genre (Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging), I prefer this genre as it is really clear to detect and the way the stories unravel are appealing. Also I like this genre as the audience mainly sees that the story usually ends with them coming together.

The next genre I enjoy is fantasy. I prefer this genre because they are unrealistic and brings peoples imaginations to life, for example vampire films are exciting as they may be someone else's fantasy and  adding these concepts in a movie about it will ensure that they like the movie.

The final genre is comedy, I enjoy comedy as some comedy films do not follow the same genre tropes as genres like horror or thriller, they are also really entertaining and some have an element of surprise.
