RESEARCH - What is genre?

 WAHT IS GENRE?

‘’Genre’’ can be used as categorizing term for any art form. In film industry, different genres present different type of films, e.g.: Comedy, Horror, Drama, etc. Genres are important part of media and film productions because they help to establish codes and convections that producers and film makers try to follow in order to make the product achieve certain expectations.

Genres can also be divided into: sub-genres, hybrid genres, genre tropes and codes & convections.

*Sub-genre is a category that is subdivision of a larger genre, e.g.: horror movie with some elements of comedy in it. The main genre would be horror and the sub-genre would be comedy.

*Hybrid genre is a cross-genre, a genre in fiction that blends themes and elements from two or more different genres.

*Genre tropes are words or expressions used in figurative sense – cliché.

*Codes and convections are systems of signs, which create meaning. They are divided into technical and symbolic. The symbolic ones have a meaning. Convections are elements that are common for films in the genre.
